When Your Believing Spouse Cools, Drifts, or Loses Their Faith
Diagnosis
Does the person you married no longer want to pray with you, skip church, or has begun questioning truths you used to affirm together? Do you feel like you're living with a spiritual stranger?
The Sword
Revelation 2:5 · Hebrews 3:12 (NIV)
Consider how far you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place. (Revelation 2:5) See to it, brothers and sisters, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. (Hebrews 3:12)
The Light
Spiritual coldness is rarely sudden. It's a slow drip: devotionals that get shorter, prayers that get postponed, church services swapped for entertainment, an unhealed wound with the church or with God that turns into bitterness. Watching your spouse walk away from faith is one of the most painful experiences for a believer, because you feel like you're losing your eternity partner. The human response is panic, sermons, pressure, emotional manipulation. But that only digs the trenches deeper. The biblical response is threefold: (1) Intercession without pressure. (2) Love with no spiritual conditions: keep loving, serving, and respecting even if they won't pray with you. (3) Self-examination without accusation: ask yourself if anything in your own spiritual life (hypocrisy, legalism, bitterness) has helped push your spouse away.
The Pact
This week: (1) Do a secret one-day fast for your spouse's soul. Don't announce it. During that day, every pang of hunger becomes a prayer: "Lord, wake [name] up. Give them back their first love." (2) Stop pressuring for 30 days. Don't mention church, the Bible, or prayer. Just be a loving, joyful, peace-filled spouse. Let your life be the sermon you don't preach. (3) Check your own heart. Ask God: "Have I been an obstacle instead of a bridge?" If the coldness is tied to a wound from the church, consider looking for a different congregation together, without pushing.
Rescue prayer
God of the desert, here is my broken heart. I didn't get married just for earth; I got married for eternity. You see my spouse's soul and You know exactly where the cold began. Holy Spirit, You who are the fire, light up again the smoldering wick of their faith. Don't let them go. And teach me to love without manipulating, to intercede without nagging, and to trust that You are the author and finisher of faith, not me. Amen.
