What do you do when marriage feels like a prison?
When the Covenant Feels Like a Prison
Diagnosis
Right now, does marriage feel like a cell that has stripped you of your identity, your freedom, or your happiness? Do you think you got tricked into this?
The Sword
Proverbs 21:9 · Genesis 2:18 (NIV)
Better to live on a corner of the roof than share a house with a quarrelsome wife. (Proverbs 21:9) The Lord God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him." (Genesis 2:18)
The Light
The prison feeling doesn't come from the institution of marriage; it comes from the death of self that the covenant demands. When both spouses get locked into their own uncommunicated expectations, the home turns into a shared tomb. It's real that, right now, you may feel the covenant was a mistake. But this is exactly where the Gospel shines: God didn't ask you to manufacture feelings of freedom; He asked you to die to yourself so something new could rise. Your "helper fit for you" isn't your housekeeper, your personal cheerleader, or your emotional savior. They are the one person on earth God designed to sand off your sharpest edges. That hurts, but it doesn't kill you—it sanctifies you. The covenant isn't the prison. The prison is the idolatrous expectation that another human being will fill the void only God can fill.
The Pact
Tonight, sit in two chairs facing each other. On a sheet of paper, each of you will write in silence for 10 minutes under the heading: "The expectation that has hurt me the most and that I've never said out loud to you." Then swap papers. Read them without interrupting. Don't respond defensively. When you're done, the one who feels more wounded says: "Thank you for telling me. I didn't know you were carrying this." Then get up and pour something warm to drink together.
Rescue prayer
God of freedom, break the lie that my covenant is my enemy. If I'm seeing my spouse as a jailer, give me eyes today to see them as the sandpaper You placed in my life. I take off their back the burden of being my source of happiness. I want to find in You the fullness I've been wrongly demanding from them. Heal me of my own expectations. Amen.
