Drawing Boundaries: The Office in Your Pocket
Audio narration — available in the app
Ecclesiastes 4:6
Better one handful with tranquility than two handfuls with toil and chasing after the wind.
Reflection
Have you ever sat on the couch at nine o'clock at night, supposedly watching a movie together, but in reality, one of you is answering 'just one more email' on your phone? Welcome to marriage in the digital age, where the office is no longer a building, but a shiny device living in our pocket.
A few decades ago, people would clock out and leave their work problems on their desks. Today, if you work in tech, own a business, develop apps, or manage online stores, the boundary between your home and your office has completely vanished.
This lack of boundaries creates what Dr. Henry Cloud calls an attention hemorrhage. The problem isn't that we work hard; the problem is the lie we tell ourselves: 'I am just going to check the server for five minutes' or 'I will reply to this urgent message and be right with you.' Those five minutes shatter the emotional connection of the entire evening.
