What is the purpose of Christian marriage beyond being happy?
Why Did God Join Us? Purpose Beyond "Being Happy"
Diagnosis
If you vanished as a couple from the face of the earth today, what mark would you leave on the Kingdom of God? Do you know the specific mission you were joined for, or are you simply managing a comfortable life?
The Sword
Genesis 1:28 · Ephesians 2:10 (NIV)
God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground." (Genesis 1:28) For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. (Ephesians 2:10)
The Light
Marriage wasn't designed as a pleasure cruise for two—it was designed as a warship with a divine mission. Happiness is a byproduct of obedience, not the bottom line. When "being happy" becomes the household god, any discomfort turns into a divorce threat. But when you grasp that God joined you with an eternal purpose—to raise a family that worships Him, to impact a community, to start a business with Kingdom ethics, to serve together in ministry, to model the Gospel—storms don't sink you; they refine you. The question isn't "Does this person make me happy?" but "Are we building together what God assigned us?" A couple without a mission devours itself. A couple with a mission tears down the gates of hell. Your home isn't a refuge to hide from the world; it's a base of operations to transform it.
The Pact
This week, take an evening (no kids, no phones) and answer these three questions together in a fresh notebook titled "Our Manifesto": (1) What talents, resources, and passions has God put into our union that didn't exist when we were single? (2) Who do we want to intentionally bless over the next 5 years? (3) If Jesus came back in 10 years, what would we want to present to Him as the fruit of our covenant? Write a single sentence that defines your marriage's mission.
Rescue prayer
God of eternal purpose, heal us from the tyranny of cheap happiness. Forgive us for turning our marriage into an idol that worships itself. Show us the good works You prepared for us before we were born. We want to be a holy partnership, an arrow shot into the darkness. Don't let our covenant end with us—let it cut through generations. Amen.
