Friction · Genesis — The Covenant and Identity
What to do when the husband won't lead or the wife competes for control?
When the Head Doesn't Lead / When the Helper Competes or Cancels
Diagnosis
Are you carrying a role that isn't yours because your spouse checked out? Or is your spouse crushing you with their control and silencing your voice?
The Sword
Genesis 1:27-28 · 1 Timothy 5:8 (NIV)
So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule…" (Genesis 1:27-28) Anyone who does not provide for their relatives, and especially for their own household, has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. (1 Timothy 5:8)
The Light
Two dysfunctions sicken the covenant unto death: the passive husband who doesn't lead, doesn't provide, and doesn't protect spiritually; and the wife who, exhausted by the vacuum, takes control with resentment and overrides her husband's voice. Both are idolatries of the role. When the head abdicates, the body panics and the fit helper is forced to be a general in a war she was never meant to fight alone. That breeds exhaustion, bitterness, and contempt. But when the wife, wounded, decides to grab the wheel with contempt, publicly humiliates her husband, and corners him, the home splits into two warring kingdoms. Restoration starts when both own their fracture: the husband must repent of his passivity as sin against his covenant. The wife must repent of her control as an attempt to be the savior of her home, a role that belongs to Christ alone.
The Pact
Sit with this book open. The one who feels overloaded says, without accusing: "I feel alone in the area of [finances/parenting/spiritual decisions]. I need you to take your place." The other answers, without defending: "I didn't know you felt that way. What's the first thing you need me to do this week?" Agree on ONE concrete task the absent spouse will pick back up in the next 7 days. Then pray together on your knees.
Rescue prayer
Lord of Hosts, restore the broken order in our home. Forgive my husband for every time he walked away from his post out of fear, comfort, or selfishness. Forgive me for every time I grabbed control in rage and contempt, humiliating him instead of praying for him. Today we break the curse of passivity and the curse of control. Return us to the Eden design: two royals under one King, reigning together without competing. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
