Friction · The Marriage Bed — Intimacy Without Masks
What to do when one spouse wants sex and the other doesn't?
When Desire Is Asymmetric (One Wants a Lot, the Other Nothing)
Diagnosis
Does it feel like one of you is chasing and the other is running? Has sexual frequency become an exhausting negotiation where one feels rejected and the other feels pressured?
The Sword
1 Corinthians 7:3-5 (NIV)
The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband. The wife does not have authority over her own body but yields it to her husband. In the same way, the husband does not have authority over his own body but yields it to his wife. Do not deprive each other except perhaps by mutual consent and for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer. Then come together again so that Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control. (1 Corinthians 7:3-5)
The Light
This is one of the most painful and least-confessed crises in the body of Christ. One burns; the other is frozen. One feels rejected, undesirable, humiliated at having to "beg." The other feels harassed, reduced to an object, guilty for not being able to turn on at will. Both are suffering. And both need to understand 1 Corinthians 7: our bodies do not exclusively belong to us within the covenant. This does not justify coercion or abuse. But it does mean that the lower-desire spouse can't simply slam the door on intimacy without considering their partner, and the higher-desire spouse can't make demands without considering the other's emotional and physical state. The fix is empathetic dialogue, searching for the root causes (exhaustion, past wounds, hormonal issues, hidden pornography, unresolved bitterness), and mutual agreement on frequency and conditions.
The Pact
Sit in a neutral place (not in bed) and talk with these rules: (1) The lower-desire spouse speaks first: "What I feel when you reach for me is… What I need from you to feel safe and desired is…" The other only listens and reflects back what they heard. (2) Then the higher-desire spouse speaks: "What I feel when you turn me down is… What sex means to me emotionally is…" (3) Agree on ONE tentative frequency for the next month. (4) The lower-desire spouse commits not to reject harshly but to offer an alternative ("Not right now, but how about tomorrow morning?"). (5) The higher-desire spouse commits not to pressure with guilt, sarcasm, or emotional withdrawal.
Rescue prayer
Lord of the covenant, heal this painful gap in our intimacy. Melt the ice and cool the fire until we are both at the temperature of Your love. Heal in my spouse the wounds, the exhaustion, the lies they've believed about their body. Heal in me the rejection, the idolatry, the anxiety. Teach us to seek the other's good above our own desire. May frequency not be a battlefield but a garden of mutual honor. Amen.
