What does the Bible say about the roles of husband and wife?
Love Like Christ, Respect Like the Church: The Design That Doesn't Enslave
Diagnosis
Do the roles in your marriage (who leads, who provides, who nurtures) feel like something culture or the church forced on you—or do you see them as a living expression of God's design for your freedom?
The Sword
Ephesians 5:21,25,33 · 1 Peter 3:7 (NIV)
Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her… However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband. (Ephesians 5:21, 25, 33) Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers. (1 Peter 3:7)
The Light
The world hates roles because it sees them as cages of power. Machismo used them to crush; radical feminism to deny them. But the Gospel redeems them: the husband isn't a tyrant—he's a servant-leader who dies for his wife the way Christ died for the Church. The wife isn't a doormat—she's a fit helper who respects voluntarily, not out of inferiority but out of divine order for harmony. God didn't erase your personality when you got married. The biblical design isn't asking you to stop being a musician, an entrepreneur, sensitive, strong, detail-oriented, or a dreamer. It's asking you to submit those gifts to the Holy Spirit to build up the home, not to compete with your spouse. The husband who washes dishes doesn't lose authority; he gains honor. The wife who makes wise financial decisions isn't usurping; she's stewarding.
The Pact
Tonight, each of you will write on an index card: (1) "What I admire most about the way you live out your role in our home is…" (2) "A personal dream or talent I want to keep alive inside our marriage is…" Swap cards. Then the husband says out loud: "I commit to honoring your individuality and not burying your gifts." The wife answers: "I commit to respecting your leadership and not competing with your calling."
Rescue prayer
Jesus, perfect model of authority and service, renew our minds. Free my husband from machismo that dominates and me from feminism that competes. Teach us that roles aren't rungs of power but postures of self-giving. Thank You that You didn't erase me when I married; You planted me in a garden where I can bloom for Your glory. Help us honor each other so deeply that our prayers will never hit a single roadblock. Amen.
