Can you schedule sex without losing the romance?
How to Schedule Sex Without Losing the Romance
Diagnosis
Do you believe "scheduled" sex is cold, forced, or unromantic? How many weeks have gone by without intimacy because "the moment never came up"?
The Sword
1 Corinthians 7:5 · Song of Songs 2:15 (NIV)
Do not deprive each other except perhaps by mutual consent and for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer. Then come together again… (1 Corinthians 7:5) Catch for us the foxes, the little foxes that ruin the vineyards, our vineyards that are in bloom. (Song of Songs 2:15)
The Light
The most widespread lie in Christian marriages is that sex should always be spontaneous. Spontaneous? With work, kids, finances, ministry, and chronic exhaustion? Unplanned spontaneity is a recipe for involuntary abstinence. Scheduling sex isn't cold; it's wise. What's cold is going weeks without intimacy "because the moment never happened." Sex with your spouse deserves at least the same calendar priority as a work meeting. The key is the how: it's not scheduled as a chore, but as an awaited date. Schedule it ahead to build anticipation: texts during the day, preparing the space, showering together, dinner without the kids. Anticipation is an aphrodisiac.
The Pact
Pull out your calendars right now. Block ONE intimacy date in the next 7 days (if you're in a desert season, one in 14 days). Treat it like an unbreakable doctor's appointment. The day before, prep: tidy the bedroom, line up the kids' logistics, send a flirty text. On the agreed day, don't wait for "the mood to hit" at 11 PM. Start the date at 8 PM with time, conversation, and unhurried touch. If one of you shows up exhausted, the other serves with a massage first. The covenant: "We'll be together in bed. If there's no intercourse, there's intimacy. But no unilateral cancellation unless it's an emergency."
Rescue prayer
Lord of time and eternity, teach us to redeem the minutes for intimacy. Break the lie that planning chills the fire. We want to honor our bed with intentionality, not with the crumbs of exhaustion. May every scheduled date be an altar of joyful anticipation. Amen.
