What is emotional infidelity and how do you recover from it?

Emotional Betrayal: "Innocent" Friendships at Work or Online

Diagnosis

Do you have a friendship with someone of the opposite sex (a coworker, a friend on social media) you share things with that you don't share with your spouse? Does it feel like that person gets you better than your partner does?

The Sword

Proverbs 4:23 · Romans 12:2 (NIV)

Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. (Proverbs 4:23) Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. (Romans 12:2)

The Light

Infidelity doesn't start in a bed. It starts in a conversation you wouldn't share with your spouse. It starts when you compare a stranger's kindness with the natural wear-and-tear of your marriage. It starts when you put your phone face down. 90% of emotional affairs don't begin with explicit lust; they begin with "we're just friends," "they listen to me," "there's nothing wrong with it." But there's an unfailing rule: if you're sharing with someone of the opposite sex something you're not sharing with your spouse, and that person is filling an emotional void, you're undermining the foundations of your covenant. If someone at work or online "gets you better than your spouse," they're not a soulmate; they're a siren. Run.

The Pact

If you feel a pang of guilt reading this: (1) Evaluate that friendship with brutal honesty. Have you said or written something you wouldn't share with your spouse? (2) Cut the cord today. If it's a coworker, limit the relationship to strictly professional. If it's online, block. (3) Tell your spouse tonight: "I want to confess that I've felt close to someone I shouldn't have. Nothing physical happened, but my heart was flirting with disloyalty. I'm asking for your forgiveness and I'm handing this over to you." It's humbling, but it saves the marriage.

Rescue prayer

Jesus, You who see what's hidden, search my heart. If I've opened an emotional door to someone who isn't my spouse, show me and give me the courage to slam it shut. Forgive me for comparing a stranger's new attention with the proven love of my covenant. Bring me back to first love with You and with my spouse. Amen.
