How do you recover from infidelity in marriage?
Adultery Discovered: The First Month of Impact
Diagnosis
Did you just discover a full-blown infidelity, or did you just confess one? Does it feel like the world is splitting in two and you don't know if your marriage can be saved—or whether you even want it to be?
The Sword
1 Corinthians 6:9-11 · 1 John 1:9 · Proverbs 28:13 (NIV)
Do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers… will inherit the kingdom of God. And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. (1 Corinthians 6:9-11) If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:9) Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper, but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy. (Proverbs 28:13)
The Light
A bomb has gone off in your home. Don't pretend it didn't happen. Don't spiritualize the pain with phrases like "God has a purpose." Right now, there's one spouse who feels their guts have been torn out, and another in the worst spiritual bankruptcy of their life. The unfaithful one needs to understand this: there is no possible justification. Not your spouse's neglect, not loneliness, not temptation. Restoration is only possible with total repentance—no excuses, no minimizing, no blame-shifting. The wounded spouse has the biblical right to divorce (Matthew 19:9), but not the obligation. The decision to rebuild isn't made today. For now, the goal isn't to decide the future of the marriage; it's to stop the spiritual bleeding. The unfaithful one must cut ALL contact with the third person immediately, with no "closure conversations."
The Pact
Execute this in the first 72 hours, no debate: (1) Radical cutoff: the unfaithful spouse cuts off today, and provably (a goodbye message read by the spouse, total block), all contact with the third person. (2) Total transparency: the unfaithful spouse hands over every password, device, and account. There's no "privacy" during the rebuilding season. (3) Immediate counseling: before the week is out, you must have reached out to a pastor or Christian marriage counselor. (4) Safe space: if the pain is unbearable, the wounded spouse can ask for a temporary separation with clear rules. It's not abandonment; it's a tourniquet.
Rescue prayer
God of all grace, we are in the ER of the soul. We have no words of our own; only groans. For the one who betrayed: break them with a repentance that doesn't look like Judas' regret, but like Peter's tears. For the one who was wounded: hold them in the hollow of Your hand. Don't let bitterness take root, or vengeance take the wheel. Jesus, who wrote in the dirt while accusers dropped their stones, write on our ground. We don't know if we can rebuild. We only know how to cry out. Amen.
