What Our Fights Are Really Hiding

Audio narration — available in the app

James 4:1-2

What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don't they come from your desires that battle within you? You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want...

Reflection

Imagine it is Tuesday night, you are exhausted, and as you walk into the kitchen, you see the breakfast dishes still in the sink. Suddenly, World War III breaks out over a dirty glass, and the two of you end up sleeping back-to-back. Do you really believe that monumental fight was over a glass? I assure you it was not.

The apostle James gives us an uncomfortable but liberating x-ray of the human heart when he asks where our quarrels come from. The answer is not 'because my husband does not help' or 'because my wife complains about everything.' James says that marital wars are born from our own internal desires and passions.

The Bible calls those hidden desires that control our mood 'idols.' We are not talking about golden statues in the living room, but about good things that we have turned into ultimate things. An idol is what your heart screams for and demands in order to feel happy, secure, or respected.
