Total Fusion: Much More Than Sharing A Bed

It sounds incredibly beautiful during the ceremony, with the background music and the formal attire. But what does it really mean when we get back from the honeymoon and realize we now share everything from the budget to the bathroom sink?

Genesis gives us the first blueprint, God's original design for marriage, and it tells us that the first step is to 'leave'. This is incredibly hard for many. Leaving father and mother does not mean you stop loving them or visiting them on holidays. It means that, from the wedding day forward, your primary loyalty and your emotional, financial, and decision-making dependence change addresses. Your core is no longer your parents; it is your spouse. If you still call your mom to approve a decision before consulting your partner, we have a foundation problem.

The second step is to 'cleave' or unite. It is taking two independent lives, sometimes used to doing whatever they want, and putting them in a blender. Before, you used to say 'my car', 'my savings', 'my free time and my weekends'. Now everything falls into the 'our' category. Stopping the habit of saying 'my money' to say 'our money' might cause some friction at first, but it is God's design. Marriage is not a contract between two roommates who split expenses fifty-fifty at the end of the month. It is a complete fusion.
