The Trap of the Showcase Marriage

Have you ever looked at pictures of other couples on social media and thought their lives are perfect? They look straight out of a magazine, without dark circles under their eyes, smiling on the beach, while you two argue in the kitchen over who takes out the trash. It is so easy to fall into the perfectionism trap and wish for a 'showcase marriage,' the kind that only exists in imagination or internet filters.

The danger of comparing our reality, with all its behind-the-scenes mess and chaos, to someone else's highlight reel is that it fills us with frustration. Perfectionism convinces us that our marriage is failing simply because we are human. And when we believe that lie, we become relentless and severe critics of our spouse, demanding a standard that no one can possibly meet.

The apostle John makes it very clear in 1 John 1:8: 'If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves.' Demanding a flawless marriage or trying to project an impeccable image to the church or extended family is living an absolute lie. The Bible is brutally honest; it tells us that we are sinners living with sinners, and marriage is no exception to that divine rule.
