The Summer of Marital Abundance
Audio narration — available in the app
Proverbs 10:5
He who gathers crops in summer is a prudent son, but he who sleeps during harvest is a disgraceful son.
Reflection
There are seasons in marriage where everything seems to flow effortlessly, where laughter is frequent, the bills are managed with ease, and even the daily dynamic feels light. Those times of peace and deep connection are the 'summer' of marriage, a wonderful gift from God designed for us to catch our breath and enjoy. In this season, intimacy surfaces naturally, dinner-table conversations linger, and the home truly feels like a sanctuary. It is the perfect time to give thanks, lower our defenses, and simply delight in each other's company.
However, summer brings with it a silent and very dangerous trap: extreme comfort. When everything is going wonderfully well, it is incredibly easy to let our spiritual guard down, stop praying together with fervor, or neglect our connection with our faith community. We begin to think that, because there is no crisis in sight, we do not need to try so hard to nurture the relationship. We quickly forget that peace is not an excuse for relational laziness, but an invaluable opportunity to grow stronger without the intense pressure of pain.
God is very clear in His Word about how to handle seasons of abundance, wisely comparing them to the harvest time. Proverbs warns us that a wise man gathers and stores his crops in the summer, while a foolish man sleeps and completely wastes the opportunity. In marital terms, this means that summer is not just for lounging in the hammock of complacency, but for filling our 'emotional reserve tank' to the brim before the climate decides to change again.
