The Output Filter: Words Seasoned With Grace

Audio narration — available in the app

Ephesians 4:29

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.

Reflection

Imagine installing a water purification system in your home. No matter how dirty the water in the main pipe is, the filter does the hard work so that what reaches your glass is pure and refreshing. In our marriage, the mouth needs a filter even more urgently than the kitchen faucet. How many times do we let out muddy, impulsive, and unprocessed words that end up intoxicating our partner?

Sometimes we use a phrase that sounds very noble but hides a lot of pride: 'I am just very honest and I say things straight to the face.' We take pride in having no filters. But let me tell you a secret of marriage design: honesty without grace is not sincerity, it is simply cruelty disguised as a virtue. Throwing truths around like stones does not make you a good communicator, it makes you an emotional sniper.

The apostle Paul gives us the perfect design for this filter in Ephesians 4:29. He asks us to let no unwholesome talk come out of our mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up and imparting grace to those who listen. Notice this carefully: the biblical standard is not just asking ourselves 'Is what I am about to say true?', the standard is 'Will hearing this right now actually build up my spouse's heart?'.
