The Ministry of Presence: Healing in Silence

There are moments in marriage where words simply fall short. When devastating news arrives, like the loss of a pregnancy, a severe diagnosis, or an unexpected layoff, our first instinct is usually to try to 'fix' the problem. We want to pull our spouse out of their sadness as quickly as possible because seeing them suffer feels unbearable to us.

However, in the midst of deep pain, logical speeches or clichés like 'everything happens for a reason' often feel more like salt in the wound than a healing bandage. When your partner's soul is raw and hurting, they don't need a theologian to explain God's sovereignty; they need a companion who is willing to cry right beside them.

In the Bible, the story of Job gives us a masterclass on the ministry of presence. When Job lost absolutely everything, his friends made a long journey to be with him. At first, they did the most brilliant and compassionate thing anyone can do in the face of monumental tragedy: they sat on the ground with him, in total silence, for seven days and seven nights.
