INTIMACY · Day 93
The Grace Response
Audio narration — available in the app
Ephesians 4:32
Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.
Reflection
Picture this scene: your spouse sits down across from you, takes a deep breath, looks into your eyes with obvious nervousness, and confesses something that hurts you. It could be hidden debt, a bad thought, a major mistake at work, or a moral fall. In that microsecond, the atmosphere in your living room freezes and your heart races.
What happens in the next five seconds will define the future of intimacy in your marriage. You have two choices: explode in anger, hurl accusations, and punish them for their honesty, or take a deep breath and choose the hardest but most redemptive path: grace.
There is a huge danger that almost no one talks about in churches: the danger of punishing honesty. If every time your partner confesses a weakness, a flaw, or a temptation, you respond with yelling, contempt, or giving them the silent treatment for weeks, guess what you are doing? You are teaching them to lie to you next time.
