The Freedom Of Being Dust At Home

Audio narration — available in the app

Psalm 103:14

For he knows how we are formed, he remembers that we are dust.

Reflection

Imagine buying a wildly expensive appliance that promises to do everything from vacuuming your house to singing you to sleep. You bring it home, turn it on, and three days later, it makes a weird noise and completely stops working. Your first reaction is pure outrage: 'I was scammed, this was supposed to be perfect!'. Sometimes, without realizing it, we enter marriage with that exact same extended-warranty, zero-defect attitude toward our spouse.

We get married, exchange rings, post beautiful pictures, and months (or days) later, our partner makes a serious mistake, a terrible financial decision, or has an unexplainable outburst of anger. And then comes the absolute shock. We are devastated. We think we married the wrong person or that love is gone forever.

But why are we so scandalized when our spouse sins or fails? Gary Thomas would give us a very confronting answer: we are devastated because, somewhere deep down, we forgot we married a sinner. Subconsciously, we elevated them to the category of immaculate angels, and when their wings fall off, we lose our minds.
