The Divine Sandpaper For An Incredible Marriage

Audio narration — available in the app

Proverbs 27:17

As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.

Reflection

Do you remember when you were dating and you loved how spontaneous and relaxed your partner was? Zero stress, pure adventure. You felt like you had found your absolute soulmate. But today, five or ten years later, that same 'romantic spontaneity' has turned into the chronically late person who forgets to take out the trash, and that relaxation now completely drives you crazy.

What happened? Did you marry the wrong person? Not at all. What happens is that God has a wonderful sense of humor and a perfect pedagogical plan. In His providence, He brings together diametrically different people and uses those differences as divine sandpaper specifically designed to polish the rough edges of your character.

We often think of marriage as an all-inclusive cruise, designed exclusively to make us feel comfortable and pampered. But God sees marriage more like a blacksmith's workshop. And let me tell you something about sharpening iron: it is noisy, it generates friction, it produces sparks, and it can become quite uncomfortable. However, it is the only known method for transforming a dull piece of metal into a useful sword.
