The Burden of the Substitute Messiah
Audio narration — available in the app
Jeremiah 2:13
"My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water."
Reflection
You have probably heard those extremely romantic phrases in movies or songs that say something like: 'you are my everything' or 'you complete me'. They sound beautiful on an anniversary card and make us sigh, but think about it for a moment: that is a gigantic burden to place on the shoulders of any human being.
When we get married, especially after the honeymoon phase fades and the bills start arriving, we sometimes subconsciously expect our partner to fix our lives. We believe their primary job is to make us perfectly happy all the time.
But here is the brutal and liberating truth: your spouse is not God. It is impossible for anyone to carry the responsibility of being your absolute source of happiness and peace. That backpack is simply too heavy for anyone to carry!
