The Art Of Entering The Other's World

Picture the scene: you've just had a terrible day, the traffic was insane, dinner got burned, and the stress level at home is so thick you could cut it with a knife. You try explaining to your spouse how frustrated you are, hoping for a hug or at least an 'I get it,' but instead you receive a three-point lecture on how you should have organized your time better. Sound familiar? We have all been on both sides of the counter, being the one who needs to be heard and the one who responds with an unsolicited instruction manual. This is the ultimate intimacy killer: the inability to step out of our own world and enter the other person's.

Often, pride convinces us that our perspective is the only one that makes sense. If my wife is stressed about something that seems trivial to me, earthly logic whispers that she is overreacting and that my job is to 'fix' her. But here is the raw reality the gospel teaches us: marriage is not about being right, it is about being in relationship. Clinging to our point of view is like trying to hug while wearing a suit of armor; you end up hurting the person you love most without even realizing it.

This is where a concept theologians call 'incarnation' comes in, but let's bring it down from the doctrinal clouds right into our living room. It means exactly what Jesus did: He didn't stay in the comfort of heaven shouting advice through a megaphone telling us to behave. He stepped down, put on our humanity, sweated under our same sun, and cried our same tears. He let go of his heavenly rights not to give us a lecture, but to connect with our pain before offering a solution. That is the exact blueprint for our marriage.
