Genesis 2:24
That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.
Reflection
Picture this scene: we are at your wedding, you say 'I do,' and suddenly, behind the cake, your in-laws pop up with their suitcases ready to live right in the middle of your living room. It sounds like a horror movie or an absurd comedy, right? But the reality is that many marriages live exactly like this, not physically, but emotionally and financially.
God's original design for marriage begins with a radical instruction that we often overlook: before you can 'unite,' you have to 'leave.' And leaving does not mean abandoning your parents, stopping your love for them, or avoiding them at Christmas. It means an absolute and definitive shift of your primary loyalty.
When the text of Genesis talks about leaving father and mother, it is telling us that marriage demands that the new family becomes your undisputed number one priority. Your spouse now has the front-row seat in your life, and your parents, whom you honor and love, transition from being the board of directors of your decisions to simply being outside advisors.
