The Armor Of God In Marriage Size

Imagine that before going to sleep, instead of locking your front door or setting the alarm, you left everything wide open, along with a 'welcome' sign for burglars. That would be completely crazy! No one in their right mind would leave their home unprotected at night. Yet, many couples do exactly this every single day in the spiritual realm.

We go out into the world, to work, to deal with traffic and financial stress, with our marriage completely unprotected. We forget that there is a real battle going on out there that seeks to destroy our family. The apostle Paul tells us to put on the armor of God, but sometimes we think of this as a mystical, distant concept—almost like a movie—and not as something highly practical for our living room.

Let's think about the belt of truth, for example. In marriage, wearing this belt doesn't mean shouting Bible verses at each other; it simply means refusing to use 'white lies'. It is telling each other the truth about how much we spent on the credit card or confessing when something hurt us, instead of offering a cold 'nothing is wrong'. Total transparency is the beginning of defense.
