1 Peter 3:8
Finally, all of you, be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble.
Reflection
Have you ever felt completely alone while sleeping just inches away from your spouse? It is one of the most painful paradoxes of marriage. You can share the same house, the same bed, the same bank account, and raise the same children, but if your emotions are invisible to your partner, loneliness will wrap around you like a cold blanket right in your living room. There is nothing more heartbreaking than being physically accompanied but emotionally abandoned.
Sometimes we think that marital loyalty is proven solely by working hard and paying the bills, but we neglect the heart. Gary Chapman reminds us that true love requires speaking each other's language, and that includes emotional validation. Validating does not mean agreeing with everything, but recognizing that what the other person feels is real and valuable. It is saying to your partner: 'I see you, I hear you, and your emotions matter to me.'
Without realizing it, we can become ruthless judges of our spouse's emotions. When one arrives tired or frustrated, the other responds from cold logic, trying to fix the situation instead of connecting with the heart. That sends a devastating message: 'Your feelings are a problem I must solve, or worse, an overreaction.'
