The Altar of Work and Ministry

Have you ever felt like you are competing against an invisible ghost for your partner's attention? That ghost usually wears an office suit, a work uniform, or, ironically, even a ministry title. It is easy to spot the classic 'enemies' of marriage, but we rarely suspect something as noble as providing for the family or serving at church.

We live in a culture that applauds exhaustion. We are told that professional success or ministry impact are the true measures of our absolute worth. So, we start leaving our best energy, our best mood, and our patience out on the street. When we drag our feet into the house after a long day, our partner only gets the 'leftovers': the fatigue, the eyes glued to the phone, and the sharp, stress-soaked replies.

Work is a gift from God and a beautiful responsibility, but it makes a terrible god. When we cross the line and turn work into our main identity, we begin to sacrifice the sacred (our home) on the altar of the temporary. The danger is so subtle because, at first, we always have a perfect excuse handy: 'I am doing it for you,' 'I have to pay off debt,' or 'I am serving God.'
