Proverbs 15:22
Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.
Reflection
Have you ever made a 'brilliant' decision on your own, only to watch it fail spectacularly a few months later? We have all been there. Whether it is buying a car that turned out to be a mechanical nightmare, taking a job that drained all the peace from your home, or making an investment that vanished. Sometimes, in the rush of everyday life, we act like solo sprinters instead of running the relay race we were designed for in our marriage.
We live in a culture that applauds the quick risk-taker who decides without consulting anyone. 'I think this is what is best for us,' we often tell ourselves as we sign a paper or give a verbal agreement without asking our spouse. Operating from unilateral control or with hidden agendas is like trying to drive a car where each person has a different steering wheel; eventually, you will crash or end up frustrated on the side of the road.
This is where renowned psychologists Henry Cloud and John Townsend remind us of something vital: marriage requires a mutual surrender of our selfish independence. Changing our mindset is urgent. It is no longer about saying 'I decide and you support me,' but about stopping and looking up together to ask: 'Lord, what do you want us to do in this season of our lives?'.
