Short Accounts: The Discipline Of Daily Forgiveness
Audio narration — available in the app
Ephesians 4:26-27
In your anger do not sin': Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold.
Reflection
Imagine deciding to stop washing the dishes at home. On the first day, a couple of dirty mugs don't seem like a big deal. However, after a week, the bad smell and lack of kitchen space make preparing a simple meal an unbearable task. The same thing happens in our marriage when we let small daily offenses pile up. A sharp reply, something forgotten, or a gesture of impatience might seem harmless at first, but if not cleaned up quickly, they end up contaminating the entire atmosphere of the home and creating an invisible barrier between you and your spouse.
The apostle Paul was very clear about this toxic accumulation when he warned us not to let the sun go down on our anger. This is not just a poetic suggestion; it is a mandate for relational survival. When we go to bed ruminating on our frustration or calculating how to make the other pay for their attitude, we are allowing a temporary offense to become permanent bitterness. Sleep does not resolve the conflict; it only solidifies it in the heart and buries it deeper, where it is much harder to extract the next day.
This lack of forgiveness in small things has a devastating effect on a couple's intimacy, both emotionally and sexually. It is impossible to surrender freely in the bedroom and enjoy physical connection when the soul is wary and defensive because of what happened at breakfast. True intimacy requires vulnerability, and vulnerability is the child of trust. When the relationship's floor is littered with the 'dirty mugs' of resentment, desire and tenderness are slowly choked beneath the weight of the unforgiven.
