Colossians 3:13
Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.
Reflection
Have you ever left dirty dishes in the kitchen for a couple of days? What initially was just a little tomato sauce hardens in a few hours and feels like cement. Washing that plate right away takes five seconds, but leaving it for later requires hot water, strong soap, and exhausted scrubbing. In marriage, offenses work exactly the same way.
When we hurt each other with a harsh word or a bad attitude, the stain on the heart is fresh. If we ask for forgiveness and forgive immediately, the connection is cleaned easily. But when we stay silent, go to sleep angry, and let pride cool the situation down, that offense hardens. Suddenly, we are no longer just upset about what happened, but full of bitterness.
There is a giant difference between saying a simple, cold 'sorry' and truly asking for forgiveness. We use 'sorry' when we accidentally bump into someone at the grocery store; it is for unintentional mistakes. But forgiveness is requested when our actions, responses, or tones of voice have wounded our spouse's heart.
