Restored Trust: Actions Speak Louder Than Words

Audio narration — available in the app

Proverbs 28:13

Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper, but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy.

Reflection

We have all been there. The storm has passed, tempers have cooled down, we have asked for forgiveness, and we shared that reconciling hug we desperately needed. It feels like breathing fresh air after being underwater. However, many couples make a critical mistake here: they believe that saying sorry magically fixes the root of the problem. But forgiveness and trust are two very different things.

Think of it like a beautiful vase that accidentally shattered. Forgiveness is sweeping up the glass so no one cuts their feet, and choosing not to hold a grudge about what happened. But trust is the glue that pieces the vase back together. Forgiveness can be granted in an instant out of pure grace, but trust is only rebuilt with real actions sustained over time.

Sometimes we use cheap forgiveness as a 'get out of jail free' card. We say 'I am sorry' just to put out the fire so our spouse will drop the subject. But if next week we go back to hiding a purchase, yelling about the messy living room, or ignoring their feelings, our 'sorry' loses all its value. Repentance without change is just manipulation.
