COMMUNICATION · Day 115

Frontend and Backend: The Soul's Interface

Audio narration — available in the app

Luke 6:45

A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.

Reflection

Hello, family! Grab a seat, have a cup of coffee with me today, because we are going to talk about something that gives us all gray hair: the way we communicate. And I want to use an example that will hit the nail on the head if you have ever dealt with technology. Imagine that the communication in your marriage is like an app on your phone; it has a part everyone sees, called the 'frontend', and a hidden part that makes everything work, called the 'backend'.

The 'frontend' is the visual interface, which in marriage would be our words, our tone of voice, the face we make when the other speaks, and even the famous punishing silence. All of that is what our spouse experiences directly. But the 'backend', my dear friends, is the deep database, the hidden logic that no one sees right away. That 'backend' is our heart, it is the secret place where we keep our motivations, fears, pride, and desires.

The most common mistake we make as spouses is trying to fix our communication problems by only modifying the 'frontend'. We read five books on 'assertive communication', we learn cliché phrases like 'I feel this way when you do that', and we swear on our knees that we will never yell again. But if the 'backend' is corrupted, if deep down our database is still full of pride or an absurd need to be right, the app is going to crash.
