Free Forgiveness, Earned Trust: Restoring The Bridge

When a category five hurricane strikes a marriage—whether through infidelity, a hidden addiction, or devastating financial deception—the house is left in ruins. In that moment of unbearable pain, many Christian couples receive advice that, while sounding highly spiritual, is deeply destructive. They are told: 'You have to forgive and trust again as if nothing happened.' That phrase has caused more emotional and psychological damage than many other things within the church, because it mixes two concepts that God separated.

We need urgent clarity on this: forgiveness and trust are not twin siblings. They are completely different. Forgiveness is a free, instantaneous, and unconditional gift that you decide to give. It depends one hundred percent on you and your connection with God. Forgiving is letting go of your spouse's neck, stopping the demand that they pay for your pain, and handing that blank check over to Jesus. But trust is an entirely different, wonderful, and painful story.

Trust is not a gift; it is a savings account that is built penny by penny. It is earned. It is conditional, requires a lot of time, and depends one hundred percent on the 'fruits of repentance' of the offender. Demanding that a devastated spouse trust again immediately is not grace, it is abuse. It is asking them to ignore their survival instincts and walk blindfolded through a minefield.
