Reflection
Have you ever put on a judge's robe right in your own living room? We all have. It happens when we see shoes left on the floor for the third time this week, or when our partner replies with that harsh tone that frustrates us so much. Suddenly, we step onto an imaginary bench and pass a sentence.
The problem with becoming the moral judge of our home is that we develop a very dangerous selective blindness. Jesus called this having a 'plank in your eye.' It is fascinating how we can be such experts at spotting our spouse's micro-mistakes while completely ignoring our own monumental flaws.
We call this 'marital pharisaism.' It is that destructive attitude that makes us believe our partner's sin (for example, being messy or having a bad temper) is infinitely worse than our own sin (like our pride, our resentment, or our coldness). We actually believe we are the 'good guys' in the movie who have to patiently put up with the 'bad guy.'
