Proverbs 25:17
Seldom set foot in your neighbor's house—too much of you, and they will hate you.
Reflection
Imagine you just bought the house of your dreams. It has a beautiful fence, but for some reason, you decided to leave the front door unlocked. Now, think about how fun it would be if your parents, in-laws, or aunts decided to walk in at any time to rearrange the furniture or share their opinions on your curtain colors. That sounds like a logistical nightmare, but sadly, it is exactly what many couples do with the emotional and relational boundaries of their own marriage.
When we get married, the Bible gives us an instruction that is foundational but incredibly hard to apply: 'Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife'. Friends, that 'leaving' is not just about changing your zip code or handing back the keys to mom's house. It is an emotional, financial, and authoritative cutting of the umbilical cord.
We often confuse the noble biblical command to honor our parents with blind submission in adulthood. Honoring a parent as an adult means caring for them, respecting them, and speaking to them with dignity, but it no longer means handing them the remote control to our decisions or letting their opinion hold more weight than our spouse's. Your new highest human authority is sleeping next to you in bed.
