Destroying the 50/50 Marriage Myth

Imagine walking into the kitchen after a long day at work. You see a mountain of dirty dishes waiting to be washed, and immediately, a small invisible notepad appears in your mind. 'Yesterday I washed the dishes, took out the trash, and bathed the kids; today it is my partner''s turn,' you think. Suddenly, marriage turns into a tennis match where both are obsessed with looking at the scoreboard instead of enjoying the game.

Modern society has sold us one of the most destructive lies for married life: the famous 50/50 myth. We are told that a fair marriage is one where everything is divided exactly in half. It sounds logical in a boardroom or a commercial contract, but it is a total disaster in our living room.

The big problem with 50/50 is that it always generates disappointment. Our human nature and innate selfishness make us overvalue our own effort and, almost accidentally, underestimate our spouse''s sacrifice. If both believe they are giving sixty percent, someone will end up frustrated, demanding that the other 'catch up' with their quota.
