INTIMACY · Day 70
Confessing Failures Without Fearing Punishment
Audio narration — available in the app
1 John 4:18
There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.
Reflection
Have you ever broken something at home or made a financial mistake, and your very first instinct was to hide it? It is a deeply human reaction. Since we were kids, we learned that making mistakes almost always came with a scolding, a punishment, or the dreaded 'I told you so.' Sadly, many of us carry that exact same defense mechanism into our marriage, living with a constant terror that our spouse will discover we are not perfect.
Living like that is absolutely exhausting. Sustaining an image of perfection from Monday to Sunday, pretending we have everything under control and never mess up, takes a massive amount of energy. It is like wearing heavy armor all day long. When we feel we must be flawless for our partner to keep loving us, our home stops being a refuge and turns into a courtroom where we are constantly on trial.
The fear of punishment is the number one killer of true emotional intimacy. If I know that confessing a bad investment, a car dent, or a poor attitude at work will result in an endless sermon or contempt from you, I guarantee you I will hide next time. We stay quiet not because we do not love our spouse, but because we feel our heart is not safe in their hands.
