Body Language: Listen With Your Whole Being

Have you ever tried to have a serious conversation with someone whose eyes are glued to their cell phone screen? They answer you with a dismissive 'uh-huh', 'yes, honey', but you know perfectly well that their brain is orbiting in another galaxy. It is deeply frustrating, is it not? The hard truth is that, without realizing it, we have all selfishly been that spouse at some point.

In the absolute madness of our daily routines, we mistakenly believe we can be brilliant emotional 'multitaskers'. We assume it is possible to deeply listen to our complaining partner while answering an urgent work email, watching the game on television, or finishing washing the dishes in the sink. But the undeniable reality is that genuine active listening demands physical exclusivity.

The beautiful passage in Mark 10:21 shows us an incredible detail about the character of Jesus. When the rich young ruler approached to speak with Him about deep struggles, the text does not simply say that Jesus answered him abruptly. It specifically states: 'Jesus looked at him and loved him'. His compassionate gaze preceded His words. His entire body language clearly stated: 'You have my complete and undivided attention right now'.
