Aligning Core Values: The Agreement to Walk Together

Imagine going out for a walk with your spouse, and one decides to head north toward the mountains while the other pulls south toward the beach. No matter how much you love each other, if your feet try to go in opposite directions, the result will be tremendous frustration, painful pulling, and ultimately, exhaustion. That is exactly what happens in marriage when our core values are not synchronized.

Sometimes we think the problem in our marriage is simply that we cannot agree on whether to buy a house or rent, or what to spend our holiday bonus on. But arguments over money, the schedule, or the kids are rarely just about logistics; they are almost always direct clashes of our worldviews. Our deepest values are what dictate our daily decisions.

If for one of you, success is hoarding wealth to feel secure, and for the other, success is giving away what you have to serve others, every time you open the bank account there will be a world war. Not because one is bad and the other is good, but because your internal 'operating system' is running incompatible programs that urgently need alignment.
