Financial Crisis
Stewardship and Trust
Objective
Recognize God's ownership over everything and order our resources under His design.
Days 1-3 · Confession and Honesty
Reveal all debt and hidden spending. Whoever conceals their sins will not prosper.
Proverbios 28:13 / Proverbs 28:13
Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper, but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy.
Reflection
Financial crises in marriage are rarely money crises; they are transparency crises. One spouse knew something they didn't share. An expense was hidden. A debt grew in silence. An expectation was never named. And one day the secret cracks open and chaos comes to light.
Solomon knew this. His proverb doesn't say 'whoever has problems doesn't prosper.' It says 'whoever CONCEALS doesn't prosper.' Concealment is what poisons, not debt. There are poor marriages that prosper in joy because their accounts are on the table, and there are rich marriages drowning in lies because each one protects their own financial file.
The Holy Spirit's first work in any crisis is to bring the hidden to light. 'Everything exposed by the light becomes visible' (Ephesians 5:13). That hurts. Not because light is cruel—it is good—but because eyes accustomed to darkness sting when opened.
Today both of you will put on the table, without justifications, everything that hasn't been shared. Debts the other doesn't know. Purchases that were hidden. Unilateral financial decisions. Money loaned that wasn't returned. Family promises that require money and weren't agreed upon. It is not the moment to evaluate who failed more; it is the moment to inventory the damage with surgical honesty.
This may take more than a day. Don't rush. Hasty confession is superficial. Bring all the documentation: account statements, cards, loans. If you can't see it because the other had it hidden, ask for it. And if you had it hidden, bring it before being confronted.
The proverb doesn't end in judgment. It ends in mercy. But mercy doesn't reach the one who conceals; it reaches the one who confesses AND forsakes. Confession without abandoning the pattern is not repentance; it is paperwork. Today is the first move. Tomorrow comes the second.
Questions to talk through together
- What financial information have I not fully shared with my spouse?
- What money decision did I make without consulting that I should have consulted on?
- What am I ashamed to confess about my relationship with money?
Action steps
- Make a comprehensive list together: ALL accounts, debts, cards, loans, income.
- Each one writes their personal financial confession on paper and reads it aloud.
- Agree NOT to discuss numbers today; just listen and thank each other for the truth.
Prayer
Father of all light, forgive my opacity. I have concealed what I should have shared. I have protected my image more than my marriage's unity. Bring to light what I have hidden. May my confession today be the beginning of Your mercy. I want to prosper, not in lies, but in transparency. In Jesus' name, amen.
